5 Healthful Spring Flings

The month of March hosts a great event: springtime. Winters, despite their snowy white beauty and awesome athletic opportunities, can often seem like one big flu season for some of us. Spring is a time of renewal, awakenings and rebirth. It’s time to consider reviving those stale New Year resolutions or to start fresh. Here are 5 Health Revolutionary actions you might want to consider:

#1. Benefit from a 3- Day Cleanse.

Yes, only 3 days of:

Breakfast:  herbal and green teas with no added creamers or sugars.

Lunch: 2-3 cups of steamed vegetables, add 2-3 tablespoons of your favorite healthy fats (hemp oil, flax oil, olive oil, avocado oil, MCT oil). Three ounces wild-caught fish, if desired.

Dinner: same as lunch. Finish by 7 PM for intermittent fasting benefits.

Snacks: herbal and green tea throughout the day.

Water: 40-60 ounces. Add fresh organic lemon and a pinch of sea salt, if desired.

#2. Tweak Your Supplements.

Support your bodily systems with probiotics, fish oil and liver support, especially if you are cleansing. These three supplements help balance the bowels and gut while assisting detoxification. Rotate through different strains and brands of probiotics for the most benefit.

#3. Choose a New Way to Move.

There is no right or wrong way to move your body. The initial step is as simple a “choose and move.” Don’t let that most common barrier—telling yourself you don’t’ have time for exercise (aka: movement) stop you.

Circumvent this false obstacle by discovering a movement that brings you joy, freedom and a sense of forward momentum. I just started swimming two to three times a week because I simply could not muster the interest to run or go back to a circuit type of workout. I “moved” to something that I enjoy at this time in life. If necessary, employ music, a desired health goal or an inspirational person to help catapult you into action.

#4. Become Part of Something New.

It’s time to leap into new territory. Perhaps you have thought about joining a book club, taking a course at the community college or volunteering at the senior center. Communities are comprised of non-profits and for-profits that could benefit from your skills and inspiration. Have you always wanted to write down your family history before it is forgotten? Spring to it!

#5. Breathe.

Treat yourself to the essence of life with this relaxing 4-7-8 technique.

– Sit upright with the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth. Keep your tongue in that position for the duration.

– Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whooshing sound.

– Close your mouth and inhale through your nose to a mental count of 4.

– Hold your breath for a count of 7.

– Exhale with the whooshing sound through your mouth to a count of 8.

– Repeat the 4-7-8 cycle three more times.

I wish you a lively, lovely spring full of joyful beginnings and many breaths of fresh air.
